FESTIVAL GREENING PROCESS
|
Environmental
Statement
Recognizing that we are all guardians of our planet and
must reduce our ecological footprint wherever possible,
the Festival of Trees organizers are committed to making
this event environmentally responsible. Given that the
Festival beneficiaries are healthcare organizations, it is
even more imperative that we promote a healthy
environment.
Background and Festival 2010
The Festival's "greening" process began in 2006
with a focus on waste reduction; and this continues to be
a major activity each year. We have also introduced
limited composting, and emphasis on local food sourcing.
Research projects have focused on the feasibility of
becoming a carbon neutral event, local food sourcing, and
waste audits. Information and education, as always, will
be included as essential to the greening process. We urge
Festival organizers and visitors to remember the 5 Rs:
reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and respect.
Greening
activities at Festival 2010 will include:
- Repetition of the waste
audits done since 2006 by students from the Trent
Centre for Community-Based Education (TCCBE).
- Composting.
- Availability of informed
students and other volunteers to monitor the waste
stations and educate other volunteers and visitors.
- Continuing work on
reducing the use of plastic water bottles.
- Use of reusable dishware
wherever possible.
- Use of compostable or
biodegradable cups, plates and cutlery wherever
possible.
- Use of double-sided,
post-consumer recycled paper in all internal &
external communications.
- Purchase of local
products and services whenever possible.
- Use of LED lights.
- Promotion of use of
Peterborough public transportation.
- Encouraging designers
and other suppliers to minimize packaging.
- Reducing the amount of
building materials going to landfill
