FESTIVAL GREENING PROCESS

Environmental Statement
Recognizing that we are all guardians of our planet and must reduce our ecological footprint wherever possible, the Festival of Trees organizers are committed to making this event environmentally responsible. Given that the Festival beneficiaries are healthcare organizations, it is even more imperative that we promote a healthy environment.

Background and Festival 2010
The Festival's "greening" process began in 2006 with a focus on waste reduction; and, in 2007 that was again the primary emphasis, in addition to limited composting and research investigating local food sourcing. Festival 2009 continued to build on these steps. Composting was added, and there was a greater focus on the use of local food. Research projects have begun on becoming a carbon neutral event and, on energy reduction. Information and education, as always, will be included as essential to the greening process. Remember the 5 Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and respect

Some of the greening activities at Festival 2009 include:
  • Repeating the waste audits done in 2006 and 2007 by students from Trent Centre for Community-Based Education (TCCBE).
  • Composting.
  • Having informed students and other volunteers to monitor the waste stations and educate other volunteers and visitors.
  • Eliminating the use of plastic water bottles.
  • Selling reusable gift bags in the gift shops.
  • Use of reusable dishware wherever possible.
  • Use of double-sided, post-consumer recycled paper in all internal & external communications.
  • Giving credit to companies showing evidence of environmental responsibility.
  • Buying local products and services whenever possible.
  • Use of LED lights.
  • Encouraging use of Peterborough public transport.
  • Including the greening message in all communications, both external and internal.
  • Serving fair trade coffee.
  • Use of reusable containers whenever possible.
